This has been an ongoing discussion topic in my grade level planning meetings. The same questions are continually asked: How do we provide real time feedback? How do we take grades?
There are no easy solutions to either question. MCPS has encouraged the use of Canvas. The issue with Canvas is that students need to submit their assignment before any feedback is given. Once feedback is given, the student needs to apply it and re submit the assignment. Some middle schoolers and most high schoolers should be able to do this. For lower level elementary school, it requires a lot more.
I have been meeting with parents frequently so they can understand how the platform works. Another strategy we have tried is using google classroom. This allows teachers the ability to watch what a student is doing exactly. This allows a teacher to give some real time feedback. Providing adequate feedback is so important. It provides the student an opportunity to reflect on their work and make changes.
Without providing feedback, it makes grading so much more difficult. We are assessing students in hopes they are able to pick up the concept immediately. Grades are also supposed to be taken from student work samples. Many parents at the elementary level are sitting next to their child. How do we get accurate data knowing that they have help from home? Let me know what you think!
