Ubuntu in school

For all educators, A phrase we hear ALL THE TIME is “classroom community”. Educators strive to make their classroom a welcome environment for all learners. Teachers will use student interest, create class rules with students, and do so much more to build a friendly community of learners. There is one idea that I always carry into the school year: Ubuntu.

I was introduced to this idea a long time ago when I was in high school. A few years later, at college, I was taking an education course called “Education in International Development.” The instructor was brilliant. We learned that education looks very different and reflects the values of the culture you are. One of the values we learned about was Ubuntu.”

The basic translation of it is, “I am because you are.” This idea is something I stress in my classroom. No one can achieve their best self without the role of others. It is a basic humanity principal. I tell my students that in order to be the best at anything, they need each other. When you live to help others, and work together, so much more can be accomplished. I strive to create this type of community where no one person is bigger than what we are trying to accomplish.

It doesn’t just stop in the classroom though. I practice this idea as a team leader. When a team member has a problem, it is not just their problem, it is mine. How can a team be happy when one member is struggling? I have tried to apply this philosophy in most aspects of my life. I can only achieve so much as an individual. But together, there unlimited possibilities.
